What’s Up With Google Project 10 To The 100th?
Last year the people at Google announced project 10^100 - an ambitious plan to crowd-source world changing idea generation . The model they chose was to put 10M US$ into selected ideas, which will be developed by organizations Google thinks can turn these ideas into products (I have a better model supporting a similar cause - jumpstart the technology revolution). Since there are so many people in the world who think they are smart (including myself), Google was overwhelmed by submissions.
The initial plan was that Google employees will filter out ideas, and the Internet community would select the top 20 ideas from those who passed the initial filter. The final stage, a panel of judges will select the top 5 projects (The project’s F.A.Q).
Here is my submission: A global solar energy grid using fiber cables.
Only problem is, idea selection have been delayed over and over again. It was originally planned to conclude by late January, then delayed until March, and then again, this time indefinitely. The reason for the delay is the unexpected number of user submissions - about 150,000!!. To this date, we haven’t heard from Google any updates on the project.
I believe the decision to postpone the selection has to do with the not-so-bright economy. After all, this is not Google’s core business, and the selection process will consume many Googlers man-hours. Additionally, shareholders might raise an eyebrows over the timing of the project (I think there is no question about its value). I hope Google decides to resume project activities A.S.A.P., even if my idea is not selected!
We’ll keep an eye on the project, we hope to update you with some good news soon. Register to our RSS feed.
Update, Sep. 26th,2009 - voting has begun, project 10^100 is alive again!! You can now vote for best idea. I must admit, the list of available project is different from what I though - I thought they would go for better solar panels, hybrid cars etc. Instead, it’s almost all about software.

google has disappointed not once but twice. my point is that google shld atleast mention the date of the list..
My name is Evan Kroske, and I publish an obscure blog appropriately names Welcome to Obscurity. It has been over 100 days since Google was supposed to announce the 100 finalists for Project 10^100, and there has been no news since then. I fear that Google has reduced the priority of the project and that the finalists could be announced another six months from now.
The world needs this project and its money now; ten million dollars would accomplish far more now than it would a year from now. It is time for Google to set a date for the announcements of the finalists and stick to it this time. Help me prod Google to take action by placing my Google Day counter on your project’s blog or website (http://welcome2obscurity.blogspot.com/2009/05/support-googles-plan-to-save-earth.html). This widget displays the number of days that have elapsed since the day the finalists were to be announced and provides a link to an explanation.
If we provide Google exposure for Project 10^100, they will devote more resources to it. We need to tell Google that the world needs this money now.
Sincerely,
Evan Kroske
While I am not surprised that Google has delayed it’s project 10 to the 100, I am surprised at the way they failed to timely announce the delay. They showed little or no respect or consideration for the people that had submitted proposals.
Case in point. I had spent time and money preparing my proposal and then I had also gone to considerable lengths to be ready for the voting which was to start on January 27th. Now Google had to know well before that date that they were not going to make it. However they choose to wait until the night of January 26th to announce that fact. A good deal of time, energy, and money preparing for the vote by those who had submitted proposals could have been saved if Google had announced in a timely fashion the delay.
They did the exact same thing on the March 17th date. They knew well ahead that they would not make that date also. They waited until the night of March 16th to announce that fact.
To have the knowledge that you will not perform and then not to divulge that fact in a timely fashion comes pretty close to fraud.
I wasn’t aware that they posponed it indefinatly. So there has not been another date given? Can we even talk to a real person?
